Bespoke Clothing for Women

Tis the cross I must bear, no matter how many times I feel I post about making clothing for women, I constantly hear surprise. For most, making custom clothing for women means they are manipulating a mens pattern to fit a women’s body. But our team of pattern makers has dedicated countless R&D hours into creating true patterns for women. Bards offer an elevated experience for women, creating clothing to fit their bodies and tell their stories. So, today we talk about the ladies!

Hali is a long time friend and 4 years ago tomorrow she was a part of a crew that went to my factory in Rochester and took photos to help my newborn business. I couldn’t pay her so I made some clothing and every time it has been one of the most rewarding experiences.

We first made this shorter, softer blazer made up of Bamboo & Wool. I always envisioned it as a layering piece, here we draped it over her shoulders as she strolled through downtown Branford, CT. We even paired it with black tuxedo buttons to give more contrast.

Recently we made a trouser, vest combo from Dormeuil fabric. A silk and wool blend, light, easy, elegant, we made them high waisted and wide legged.

Height and stunning features are her ally’s, so I wanted clothing that was more solid, not to take away from her, but to accentuate.

Oh Jess, this garment was such a pleasure.

Jess and her wife own For Fearless Hearts wedding videography. When I first met with the two of them, I was immediately struck by their energy. It was fun, unique, empathetic, and also this underlying yet overwhelming sense of joy.

It immediately drew me to a white paisley jacket, the subtlety on the print would draw you in, much like her natural charisma. Yet I went with the contrasting silver piping on the lapels and cuffs to show more of the directoral aspect, the command she derives in each situation.

Bards owes a lot to our dear friend Katharine Donovan Photography

Pink is her brand color and when she approached me about creating a blazer. I knew there was one fabric I needed to show her. Scabal rolled our their Capri book and it had a swatch called “Neon Pink”

We rocked and rolled, even made the lining the NYC Skyline. Her sleeves are perpetually rolled so we made them 3/4 length.

She loved the jacket so much she came back for the matching pants!

How could we forget the queen herself, Melissa Lynn Oddo the raddest human on the planet. My co-host for The Fabric of America podcast and truly one of my best friends.

Back in the early days of Bards, Melissa reached out for a suit. She was going to be featured on the news. (She crushed btw). Sticking with her branding colors, we dawned a soft pink suit with white tipping, almost bringing a coastal vibe. The pants are high waisted and pleated.

The idea behind this suit was to be able to break it up, which I have seen her do on many occasions.
